Subject: U of I Loves FJB
Though it sounds like there isn't anyone in the audience at the start of the show, people certainly filter in later on and by the end, the band was probably playing to a packed house. Check out the videos of FJB playing at Mabel's on YouTube, looks like they love playing there and the crowd loves them. This particular recording wasn't their first show at Mabel's, as Marty mentioned that it was "nice to be back" but it had to be one of the first. John Kattke joins them on keys, though I really don't like his background vocals (or his lead vocals on "Stagger Lee", for that matter). He also screwed up the "disco" part of "Dixie Dynamite" that they had been playing the last few shows. Interesting "Puppet" intro to "Easy Street" - not sure what that was all about. But overall, a very fun show that the band clearly enjoyed playing, and I think it shows in their playing. Great versions of "And She Cried" and "In a Daydream" in particular.
